Carrot cultivation technique in India

Carrot is one of the nutrition vegetable grown throughout the world. Commercial cultivation of carrot is successful in most of the regions. About 60% of world carrot cultivation production in Asia alone. Carrots common to Asia have purple pink or red skins, with yellow or orange cores. Growing and harvesting carrots is a great way to take advantage of there nutrient  benefits. Carrot farming plays major role in India economy as it is major vegetable crop in India.

Varieties of carrot breeds in India

There are many varieties of carrot grown in Asia. Here are some of popular varieties is below-

Hills– Ooty-1, Early Nantes and new korods.

Plains– India Gold,pusa keser, and half long Danvers.

Soil of carrot cultivation-

Carrot is a cool season crop and will develop agood colour when grown at 150 c to 200 c . The crop needs deep loose loamy soil. It requires a ph ranging from 6.0-7.0 for higher production.

Best season carrot cultivation

Hills season– At elevation above 1500 meters, carrot can be grown throughout the year under assured irrigation. At elevations between 1000-1500 meters, carrot can be grown in July- February.

Plains – August.

Seed rate carrot cultivation – About 4kg/ha is required.

Plant spacing of Carrot farming

Mark the rows with spacing 25-30cm apart. Sow the seeds mixed with sand lone part of seed with one part of sands. (One of seed with one part of sand)

Thning of carrot farming

Hills– 10cm between plants.

Plains– 5cm between plants.

Preparation of field carrot cultivation

Hills– Prepare the land to a fine title and form raised.

Plains– Two ploughing are given and furrows are formed at 30cm spacing.

Seed treatment carrot cultivation

The following ways seeds can be treated before sowing in the garden-

i) Carrot out the seed treatment with 5% Trichoderma viride.

ii) Carry out the seed treatment with cow pat pit @ 3 grams in 1 litre of water for 24 hours.

iii) Seedling root dip with 5% of pseudomanas fluarescns before trans planting in the main field.

Irrigation in carrot cultivation

Give light Irrigation while sowing the seeds in the field. On an average, it requre irrigation in 4 to 5 days interval. During drought periods, after giving irrigatio in the evening, crops beds should be cover wet wet climatic condition. This also makes seeds to germination quickly.

Manures and fertilizer carrot cultivation

Well rotten from yard manure (FYM) of 30 to 35 tonnes should be applied during land preparation. This may be increased up to 50 tonnes/ha in case of organic carrot farming. The N.P.K. of 90:90:90 kg/ha should be applide  as  basal done N:P:K 45:45:45 kg/ha should be applied after 45 days of sowing the seeds. Application 25kg of ZnSo4  per ha a basal also recommended.

Growth regulator in carrot cultivation

i) Foliar spraying of panchagavya @3% at 10 days interval from 1st month.

ii) Spraying 10% vermiwash 5 times 15 days interval from one month after sowing.

iii) Foliar spray of horn silica @2.5g/ha in 50 litres of water on 65th day after sowing to increase the yield and quality of the carrot roots.

Pest and disease carrot cultivation

Rot knot nematode carrot farming

i) Growing carrot one in 3 years by following cropotation.

ii) Growing marigold once in 2 years.

iii) Application of paecllomyces lilacinus @ 10kg/ha before sowing seeds.

Yield carrot cultivation– 20-30 t/ha in 100-120 days.

Post Harvesting carrot cultivation

Carrot should be graded based on other size and length. The carrots should ideally unifrom in all aspects and similar shape for the variety, well formed, smooth, firm but of tender texture. It should also be free from harvest damage, decacy or disease for best quality marketing. Markets can be done on daily basis to local markets or can be packed for imports to long distance markets.
