Papaya pest and disease control method

Papaya tree disease treatment– The plants is not affected by any serious pest. Birds damage the fruits for which bird scaring by mechanical means is very effective method of control . Sometime mites, white flies, fruit flies and stem borers cause damage. Below we look at some of the Papaya tree disease treatment and papaya trees pest treatment to watch out for-

Study Papaya tree disease treatment

Colar rot and stem rot

papaya stem rot
papaya stem rot

The first symptom is the appearance of water soaked patches on the stem at the ground level. These patches enlarge and girdle the entire base of the stem. The infected tissues become dark brown or black due to rotting. The terminal leaves droop, wilt turn yellow and fall down. If fruits are formed, they drop. The entire plant topples over and dies because of the disintegration of the parenchymatous tissues of the stem. The internal tissues look a honey comb. The stem rot is commonly seen in two to three years old plant. The pathogen also incites damping off seedlings in the nursery bed. The seedlings raised in the infested soil may carry the disease. The pathogen inhabits in the soil and the fruits persist on the papaya residues left in the soil.

Management

I) Badly damaged plant should be uprooted and burnt.

II) Ensure good drainage of the soil.

III) Seed treatment with Agrosan G.N. or Ceresan improves the emergence of seedling.

IV) Thorough drenching of the exposed soil around the stem base and also spraying the stem with 6:6:50 Bordeaux mixture or 0.2% Esso fungicide 406 or any copper fungicide @ 3g/lite of water will help in controlling the disease effectively.

Anthracnose

Fruits are severly affected as all the spots on the fruits become depressed and bear pinkish masses of spores of the fungus. The infected leaves bearing sports show shredded margins.

Management

i) Destroy the infected fruits.

ii) Spray 0.2% Ziram or Captan or Indofil M-45 (0.5kg in 250 litres of water) at fortnightly intervals.

Leaf sports (Papaya tree disease treatment)

The disease is characterized by appearance of spots on the leaves. The sports can be round, irregular, oval or elongated. They look white in centre and are often bounded by a yellowish or brownish margin which merges into the normal green portion of the leaf. The centre of the spot become thin and papaya and finally drop out. The fungus perpetuates in the plant debris and disseminated by wind.

Management

Spray three times with 1% Bordeaux mixture for complete control.

Papaya leaf curl

The disease is characterised by severe curling, crinkling and distortion of leaves accompanied by vein clearing and reduction in the leaf size. Inverted cups are formed due to inward and downward rolling of leaf margins. The veins thicken and turn dark green in colour. Petioles get twisted in a zigzag fashion. The disease leaves become leathery and brittle. Infected plants are stunted. The affected plants do not flower or bear only a few fruits. In the advanced stages defoliation occurs. The virus is transmitted by white fly, Bemisia tabaci.

Management

i)  Affected plants must be uprooted in the early stage of disease development and destroyed.

ii) Infestation of insect vectors should be checked by spraying 625ml of malathion 50EC or oxydemeton methyl 25EC in 625 litres of water/ha.

Papaya mosaic (Papaya tree disease treatment)

The typical symptom appears on the leaves. The leaves show profuse mottling and puckering, chlorotic and malformed appearance and sometimes modification into tendril like structures. The leaves are reduced in size. The old leaves get defoliated leaving only a tuft of small ones at the top. The infected plants bear only a few fruits which remain abnormally small. They get deformed and may also show large assume an upright position. In addition to papaya the virus can infect a large number of common cultivated cucurbits.

Management

i) For transplanting only healthy seedling should be used.

ii) Spray insecticides as mentioned for papaya leaf curl to keep the vector population in check.

Stem borer

This is a sporadic pest. The caterpillars bore into the stem and cause negligible damage.

Management

The infected parts should be cut and destroyed.

 white fly

The nymphs and adults suck the sap from the leaves and transmit the leaf curl virus.

Management

i) Uproot and destroy the infected plants immediately

ii) Spray 625ml of malathion 50EC litres of water /ha

Aphid

The nymphs and adult suck the cell sap from leaves and transmit the papaya mosaic virus.

Management

i) Uproot and destroy the infected plants immediately

ii) Spray 625ml of malathion 50EC litres of water /ha

Grasshopper

Both adults and nymphs feed voraciously on leaves and skeletonize them. In case of service infestation, even the bark of trees is not spared.

Management

Dust carbaryl 10%@ 25kg/ha or malathion 5% @50kg/ha

Red spider mite

The mite is found on ventral leaf surface and occasionally on fruits as well. Both nymphs and adults remain protected under webs and suck the cell sap therefrom causing the leaves to turn yellow and fruits to become rough and brownish.

Management

Spray 500ml of dimethoate 30EC or oxydemeton methyl 25EC in 625 litres of water/ha and repeat spray after 10days interval.

Root knot nematode

The nematodes infest the roots and cause yellowing and curling of leaves. Young plants may be killed.

Management

Fumigation of soil with DD should be done before planting. DBCP application in irrigation water @ 15-30 litres/ha in standing crop is very effective.
