Vermicompost is a beneficial Earth-friendly recycling project. Not only will it break down yard waste and Food Scraps. The vermicompost is very important to the fertility of the soil. The casting high amounts of Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, and calcium. Today I fully discuss vermicompost preparationmethod on the home basis and advantage vermicompost.
Materials for vermicompost preparation i) Leaf Litter ii) Vegetable waste iii) Waste from Agri-industries iv) Crop residues v) Weed biomass vi) Cow dung vii) Hotel refuse
Vermicompost preparation method
Advantage and benefits of vermicompost i) Vermicompost is an eco-friendly natural fertilizer prepared from biodegradable organic wastes and is free from chemical inputs. ii) It does not have any advantage effect on soil, plant, and environment. iii) It improves soil aeration, texture and tilth thereby reducing soil compaction. iv) It improves water retention capacity of soil because of its high organic matter content. v) It promotes better root growth and nutrient absorption. vi) It improves nutrient status of soil-both macronutrient and micro-nutrient. vi) The other main advantage of vermicompost minimizes the incidence of pest and diseases in growth crops/trees/ plants. vii) Percentage of N:P:K content is more in vermicompost when compared to traditional or bacterial compost.
Earthworms vermicompost production Earthworms are long and cylindrical in shape and size having a large number of grooves. There are about 3000-3500 species of earthworms are in the world which is adapted to a range of vermicompost out of which 350 species have been identified in India.
Vermicompost preparation method
i) Initially you need to gather bio-degradable agro cultivation waste. ii) Cut them into small pieces by hand-operated cutting machine. iii) Allow them for partial decomposition for 10 to 45 days. It will help you in achieving a better activity of earthworm. iv) A vermicomposting unit should be in a cool moist and shady site. v) Beds of a partially decomposed material of the size and shady site. vi) Partially decomposed agro waste material is then arranged in layers of at the vermicompost bed and this layer will be 6 parts. vii) Apply the 1st layer of cow dung slurry on it 10 further decomposing of the agro waste for 15 to 20 days viii) After partial decomposition cover with cow dung slurry with the 4th layer of farmyard Manure. ix) Apply red earthworm (1500-2000) on the upper layer of bed. Water should be sprinkled with con immediately after the release of worms. x) It is necessary to maintain optimal temperature of 28 to 30c for the faster transformation of bio-material. xi) Beds should be kept moist by a sprinkling of water (daily) and by covering with gummy bags/polythene. xii) The bed should be turned once after 30 days for maintaining aeration and for proper decomposition. xiii) Compost will get ready in 45-50 days.
How to make vermicompost preparation in home
You can make vermicompost preparation in small quantities at home with the following steps- i) Buy/arrange a vessel or bin. One bin sits inside the other and has some small holes drilled in the bottom so water can drain from the compost into the second bin. ii) Placement of the compost bin is important. Many apartment complexes don’t allow stage on balconies you may have to strategically hide the compost bin so it not visible from the outside. iii) We only need one lid for the system, and want to cut some holes to allow the warms to breathe. Having said like this helps keep the smell down if your worm bin inside. I drilled a few holes in the lid, then covered it with landscape fabric, the stuff you but under rocks and mulch to keep weeds down. iv) Add a little bit of food and a small scope of dirt and wait about two weeks. The feed grows a good crop of microbes that the worms will eat. v) I get my worms through the mail from uncle jims worm from because 1000 worms is not that expensive and it is easy to do that way. There’s no reason you cannot collect your own worms if you do a little bit of digging, especially shortly after a rain, you want red wigglers, not earthworms. vi) You can put just about any organic material in the bins but don’t use meat or dairy. I have also heard that citrus is bad, but have not tried myself. vii) After 3-4 months worms will have reproduces and number in the thousands. They will produce wonderful compost in much less time than a normal pile store harvest vermicompost for two-three weeks and remove the young earthworms.
Rate of Application of vermicompost in various crops Though it can be applied at any stage, mixing in soil after broadcasting fetch more benefits- i) Usually any field crops require 6-7 tonnes/ha. ii) Any vegetable crops requires 11-12 tonnes/ha. iii) Any flower plants require 100-250 grams/ square feet. iv) Any fruit trees require 6-12kg/tree.
